OHWOAI: Best practices for power layout and power line selection for surveillance camera systems

In surveillance projects, the proper placement of power supply and the selection of power lines are very important to ensure the normal and reliable operation of surveillance equipment. In surveillance camera systems, the power supply of security cameras is a prerequisite for the normal operation of the equipment. Therefore, the proper placement of power supply and the selection of power lines in video surveillance camera systems are very important. Today, we will explore the application of power supply from the perspective of OHWOAI.

Power SettingsThe power settings for security cameras should be considered based on the distance between the security cameras and the control host. If the security cameras are close to the host, install a high-power DC stabilized power supply close to the host and connect multiple security cameras to this power supply. The output of the DC power supply should be greater than the total output of all the security cameras.
If the security camera is far from the host, a 220V AC power supply should be provided near the security camera, and a stabilized power supply for voltage conversion should be used to power the security camera. In this case, the 220V AC power line should be at least 30 cm away from the video line to avoid magnetic field interference and affect the video transmission quality.

Power supply selection The choice of power supply line requires some calculation. Below are some of the working currents of some common 12V powered security cameras:

Ordinary gun-type security camera or hemispheric security camera: the working current is about 200-300mA, and you can choose 500MA-1A power supply.
Integrated security camera: The working current is about 350-400mA, and you can choose 1A power supply.
Small to medium sized infrared security camera: working current is 600-700mA, 1A power supply can be selected.
Large infrared security camera: the working current is 1000mA-1200mA, and you can choose 2A power supply.
When powering the entire surveillance camera system, you can power each security camera individually or connect multiple security cameras to a central power source. When powering multiple security cameras centrally, the current required is equal to the sum of the currents of the multiple security cameras. For example, if a surveillance camera system needs to provide a unified power supply for 10 hemispherical security cameras, assuming that the current of one hemispherical security camera is 300-400mA, the current of the 10 security cameras will be 3000MA-4000MA, so you need to choose a 5A or 6A power supply. Power Cable Diameter Selection The choice of power cable depends on the distance from the security camera to the monitoring host. Below are some suggestions for different situations:

If the security cameras are less than 40 meters away from the monitoring host, each security camera can be individually connected to the monitoring host using RVV2×0.5 power lines and powered using a small switching power supply. If there are four hemisphere security cameras or gun security cameras, you can choose two 12V1A power supplies or one 12V2A power supply to power the four security cameras in parallel.
If there are many security cameras, for example 8 security cameras, a high-power 12V DC stabilized power supply should be used to centralize power supply. In this case, the current is large, so the voltage drop of the power line must be considered. Normally, for a system with 8 security cameras, the farthest distance should be less than 40 meters, and a centralized power supply can be used using RVV2×0.75 power line. For a 16-way system, RVV2×1.0 power line should be selected. These suggestions apply when the distance from the security camera to the monitoring host is less than 40 meters.
If the distance from the security camera to the monitoring host is more than 40 meters, you need to use a centralized 220V power supply and perform voltage conversion at the security camera end to change the voltage to 12V for supply. In general, if you use a 220V supply, you can use the RVV2×0.75 power line if the distance is less than 200 meters, as long as the system is not too large (less than 8 lines). If it is more than 8 lines, and if you use a high-power infrared security camera, you should choose the RVV2×1.0 power line. In addition, if the distance is longer, it is recommended to use the RVV2×1.5 power line to ensure safety.

How to Select a Power Cable There are two common methods for selecting a power cable:
Power supply using twisted pair cable: Use Cat5 or Cat5 or higher unshielded twisted pair cable as the power line for the surveillance camera. This method can simplify wiring, but you need to make sure that the power transmitted meets the requirements of the device. For example, if the operating voltage of the device is 10-12VDC and the current is 500MA, if the internal resistance of the twisted pair cable is 10Ω/100 meters (about 9.53Ω per 100 meters when using oxygen-free copper), the power transmitted must be within 150 meters to ensure normal use of the device.
Use independent RVV power lines: You can choose the power line of the appropriate specification according to the output of the security camera of the terminal. If the number of security cameras is small (up to 5 cameras) and the distance from the monitoring host is short (less than 50 meters), each security camera can be supplied individually using the RVV2 × 0.5 power line. If the number of security cameras is large, they can be centrally powered using a high-power 12V DC stabilized power supply. In this process, the total output of all security cameras and the voltage drop of the power line must be taken into account. In the building surveillance camera system, two 2.5-6m2 copper-core twisted pair cables are usually used as the main power line, which is drawn from the surveillance host to the line well and distributed to the line wells of each floor. The corresponding power line can be used to power the security cameras on each floor.
